چکیده

A bstnzct An airborne Ku-band scatterometer (NUSCAT) was used to measure ocean backscatters during the Surface Wave Dynamics Experiment (S WADE). The objective is to improve understanding of the relationship between ocean radar backscatter and near surface winds. BackScatter measurements are presented for Gulf-Stream boundary, low wind, and large wave effects. Over the boundary crossings, large airsea temperature differences are encountered and substantial changes in the radar cross section are observed. At low wind speeds, the behavior of measured radar cross sections is different from model predictions in several cases and backscatters are occasionally very low in the cross-wind direction. Large waves due to swells have little impact at moderate winds but significantly increase backscatter at light winds.

Azimuthal modulation of C-band scatterometer σ0 over Southern Ocean sea ice

In a continuing evaluation of the ERS-1 C-band scatterometer as a tool for studying polar sea ice, we evaluate the azimuthal modulation characteristics of Antarctic sea ice. ERS-1 AMI scatterometer mode data sets from several study regions dispersed in the Antarctic seasonal sea ice pack are evaluated for azimuthal modulation. When appropriate, the incidence angle dependence is estimated and re...

L-band Imaging Radiometry with Airborne HUT-2D Interferometer – From the Performance to Remote Sensing Applications

Airborne radiometer system HUT-2D, operated by Helsinki University of Finland (TKK), stands for a new technology in the field of remote sensing. Applying the novel principles of interferometry and aperture synthesis, the instrument is capable in multi-angular airborne measurements at L-band, 1.41 GHz to be exact [1]. The most important environmental parameters desired from the measurements of t...

Laboratory measurements of sea ice: connections to microwave remote sensing

The connections between laboratory measurements and remote-sensing observations of sea ice are explored. The focus of this paper is on thin ice, which is more easily simulated in a laboratory environment. We summarize results of C-band scatterometer measurements and discuss how they may help in the interpretation of remote-sensing data. We compare the measurements with observations of thin ice ...

Electromagnetic Scattering By Random Rough Surfaces

The problem of electromagnetic scattering from random rough surfaces has been the subject of intense investigation over the past several decades for its applications in a number of important remote sensing problems. With the advent of the polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR), radar remote sensing has attained significant prominence in the past decade. SAR systems are capable of producing...

Behavior of the ocean radar cross-section at low incidence, observed in the vicinity of the Gulf Stream

Observational results derived from the airborne Cband scatterometer RESSAC looking at small incidence angles (521”) were acquired in the vicinity of the Gulf Stream during the Surface Wave Dynamics Experiment in February and March 1991. Although the instrument was primarily designed to study the directional spectra of long waves, it is also possible to process the data to examine the behaviour ...
